Winter is coming, Colorado! Before you trade your helmet for a snow shovel, give your eBike a little TLC. Proper winter storage protects your battery, prevents unnecessary wear, and makes getting back on the road in spring a whole lot easier.
Whether you're storing your eBike in Leadville, Denver, Buena Vista, or anywhere in Colorado, these five simple tips will help keep your ride adventure ready.
1. Give Your eBike a Good Cleaning
Your eBike has worked hard all season. Show it some love!
Remove dirt, mud, and road grime before putting it away. Wipe down the frame, clean the drivetrain, and dry everything thoroughly. A clean bike helps prevent corrosion and keeps components in better condition.
Quick tip: Skip the pressure washer. A damp cloth, soft brush, and bike-friendly cleaner will do the trick.
2. Take Care of That Battery
Your battery deserves a cozy winter vacation, too!
For many lithium-ion eBike batteries, a charge around 60% - 80% is a reasonable storage starting point, although manufacturer recommendations vary. Avoid storing a fully depleted battery, and don't leave it plugged into the charger all winter.
Check the battery every month or two and recharge only when needed, following your manufacturer's instructions.
Colorado tip: If possible, remove your battery and store it indoors in a cool, dry, temperature-controlled location. Never charge a battery while it's freezing cold. Allow it to warm to the manufacturer's recommended charging temperature first.
3. Find Your eBike a Winter Home
Your eBike doesn't need a luxury mountain cabin, but it does appreciate a dry place to relax.
A garage, indoor storage room, or other protected space works well. Avoid prolonged exposure to snow, moisture, and extreme temperatures.
If your garage gets below freezing, consider bringing the removable battery inside.
4. Don't Forget the Tires
Nobody wants to start spring with flat spots or cracked tires.
Inflate your tires to the manufacturer's recommended pressure before storage. Check them periodically throughout winter, since tire pressure naturally drops over time.
Bonus tip: If your eBike will sit for several months, move it occasionally to change where the tires contact the ground.
5. Cover It Up and Let It Hibernate
Give your eBike a breathable cover to keep dust and curious critters away.
Avoid trapping moisture under plastic. A clean, dry bike with a breathable cover is much happier than one wrapped tightly in damp material.
And just like that, your eBike is ready for its winter nap!
Colorado Winters Are Tough. Your eBike Can Handle Them.
Between freezing temperatures, dry mountain air, and dramatic weather changes, Colorado winters can be challenging for eBikes.
