Getting to Leadville is straightforward. Leaving is often the harder part.
At 10,152 feet above sea level, Leadville is the highest incorporated city in the United States. Set between towering peaks and historic mining country, it offers dramatic scenery, rich history, and enough thin mountain air to make your lungs take notice.
The good news: you do not need a four-wheel-drive monster truck, a team of pack mules, or a hand-drawn prospector’s map to get here.
You simply need to choose the right route.
Whether you are traveling from Denver, Colorado Springs, Breckenridge, Vail, or farther afield, this guide explains how to reach Leadville and shares practical advice from people who live and work here.
Where Is Leadville, Colorado?

How to Get to Leadville from Denver
Recommended Year-Round Route
For most visitors, the most reliable year-round route is I-70 west to Copper Mountain, followed by Highway 91 south to Leadville:
- Take Interstate 70 west from Denver.
- Continue through the Eisenhower-Johnson Memorial Tunnel.
- Take Exit 195 toward Copper Mountain and Leadville.
- Follow Colorado Highway 91 south over Fremont Pass.
- Continue into Leadville.
You'll pass mountain peaks, historic mining areas, and scenery that makes you understand why people keep moving to Colorado.
Local tip: Fremont Pass reaches approximately 11,318 feet. That's higher than most people's vacation destinations, and you're not even at the hiking trail yet.
Alternative Route from Denver
You can also take US Highway 285 southwest toward Fairplay, then Highway 9 north and Highway 24 west into Leadville.
This is a beautiful drive through South Park, with wide-open views, historic communities, and fewer interstate miles.
Depending on weather and traffic, it can be an excellent alternative.
Just don't assume the scenic route is always the faster route.
How to Get to Leadville from Colorado Springs
One of the most scenic approaches to Leadville comes from Colorado Springs.
The typical route follows US Highway 24 west through Woodland Park, across Wilkerson Pass, and through South Park toward Buena Vista.
From Buena Vista, continue north on US Highway 24 to Leadville.
You'll see big mountain views, wide valleys, and some of Colorado's best high-country scenery.
Local tip: Plan a little extra time. You'll probably stop for photos, coffee, or because someone in the car just yelled, "LOOK AT THAT MOUNTAIN!"
How to Get to Leadville from Breckenridge and Frisco
Already vacationing in Summit County?
Great news. Leadville is practically next door by mountain-town standards.
From Breckenridge, head north on Highway 9 toward Frisco, connect to I-70 west, and then take Highway 91 south from Copper Mountain.
From Frisco, take I-70 west to Exit 195 and follow Highway 91 south.
The drive takes roughly 40-60 minutes, depending on where you're starting.
And here's a little secret: If you love mountain scenery, history, and outdoor adventures but would prefer a town with fewer designer ski jackets, Leadville might be exactly what you're looking for.
How to Get to Leadville from Vail
Take I-70 east toward Copper Mountain, exit onto Highway 91 south, and follow it over Fremont Pass into Leadville.
It's a relatively short drive and an easy way to trade the resort atmosphere for historic mining-town character.
Plus, you can tell your friends you visited the highest incorporated city in America.
That's worth at least a little bragging.
How to Get to Leadville from Buena Vista
This one's simple.
Take US Highway 24 north from Buena Vista directly into Leadville.
The drive is approximately 35 miles and follows the beautiful Upper Arkansas River Valley.
You'll pass incredible mountain scenery, access points for outdoor adventures, and views of some of Colorado's highest peaks.
Driving to Leadville from Aspen
Yes, but this is where things get interesting.
During the warmer months, you can travel from Aspen over Independence Pass on Highway 82, connect with Highway 24 near Twin Lakes, and continue north to Leadville.
Independence Pass climbs to 12,095 feet and offers some of the most dramatic scenery in Colorado.
However, the pass is seasonal and closes during winter. The highway also has narrow sections and vehicle restrictions.
If Independence Pass is closed, you'll need a significantly longer alternative route.
Before departing, especially in spring or fall, check current road conditions, seasonal closures, and vehicle restrictions.
And please don't argue with a closed-road sign. The sign usually wins.
Closest Airports to Leadville
For most visitors flying into Colorado, Denver International Airport (DEN) is the most practical choice.
From the airport, plan on approximately 2.5 - 3 hours of driving in good conditions.
Eagle County Regional Airport (EGE), near Gypsum, is another option, particularly for travelers coming from western Colorado or using available seasonal flights.
Leadville also has Lake County Airport, a high-altitude general aviation airport, but it's not a regular commercial airline destination.
For most visitors, renting a car is the easiest way to reach Leadville and explore the surrounding area.
Vehicle and Road Requirements
In summer? Usually not. In winter? Good tires matter more than your confidence.
Leadville is accessible by paved state and US highways year-round, subject to temporary weather-related closures.
During summer, a regular passenger vehicle is generally fine for getting into town.
During winter, conditions can change quickly, and Colorado's traction and chain laws may apply.
Check your tires, your vehicle's capabilities, and the forecast.
A four-wheel-drive vehicle with terrible tires is still a terrible idea.
Winter Driving
Winter in Leadville is beautiful.
It's also winter at 10,152 feet, which means Mother Nature occasionally likes to remind everyone who's in charge.
Before traveling in winter:
- Check COtrip.org for road conditions and closures.
- Allow extra travel time.
- Carry warm clothing, water, and basic emergency supplies.
- Make sure your tires meet applicable traction requirements.
- Avoid unnecessary travel during major winter storms.
And remember: Just because the sun is shining in Denver doesn't mean it's sunny in Leadville.
We have our own weather department up here. It doesn't always communicate with the rest of the state.
Getting to Leadville Without a Car
It's possible, but it takes more planning.
Regional transit options are limited compared with Colorado's larger resort communities, and schedules and connections can change.
Some travelers use a combination of airport transportation, regional bus service, private shuttles, or rides from nearby towns.
Check available services and schedules before planning a car-free trip.
Once you're in Leadville, the historic downtown is wonderfully walkable, and exploring by eBike is one of our favorite ways to experience the area.
Which brings us to the fun part.

Before You Explore Leadville
1. The altitude is real. At over 10,000 feet, take your time, drink water, and give yourself a chance to adjust. If you're feeling unwell, don't push through it.
2. Dress in layers. A sunny morning can turn into a chilly afternoon, even during summer.
3. Bring sunscreen. The mountain sun is stronger than you think.
4. Respect the mountains. Stay on designated routes, pay attention to weather, and leave historic sites the way you found them.
5. Leave room in your schedule. Leadville has a funny way of turning a two-hour visit into an entire weekend.
