There are plenty of beautiful places to ride an eBike in Colorado, but few come with as much history as Leadville's Route of Silver Kings. This scenic route winds through the town's historic East Side Mining District, where old mine structures, rugged hillsides, and incredible mountain views offer a glimpse into Colorado's silver mining days.
It's one of those places where you can spend an afternoon enjoying the scenery and accidentally learn a little history along the way.
A Little History with Your Mountain Views
In the late 1800s, Leadville was one of the richest silver mining towns in the country. Thousands of people arrived hoping to make their fortunes, and the surrounding hills quickly filled with mines, roads, and the occasional questionable business venture.
Some people struck it rich. Plenty of others went home with considerably less than they arrived with.
Today, the Route of Silver Kings takes visitors through the landscape that helped make Leadville famous. You'll see remnants of old mining operations, historic structures, and the enormous piles of rock left behind by generations of miners.
It's a fascinating part of Colorado history, and the scenery isn't bad either.
Why Explore It by eBike?
Leadville sits at more than 10,000 feet above sea level, which means even a gentle hill can remind you that you're not exactly at sea level anymore.
That's where an eBike comes in handy.
The electric assistance makes exploring the rolling terrain much more enjoyable, leaving you with more energy to appreciate the views, stop for photos, and take in the history.
The route offers a wonderful mix of wide-open mountain scenery, historic mining sites, and quiet backroads. Around nearly every turn, there's something interesting to see.
Just don't be surprised if you stop for a quick picture and end up taking twenty.
More Than Just an Old Mining Road
What makes the Route of Silver Kings special is the combination of history and scenery. You're riding through an area that played an enormous role in Colorado's development, with the Sawatch Range and Leadville's surrounding mountains providing the backdrop.
It's easy to imagine how different this landscape must have looked when the mines were operating and the hills were filled with workers, equipment, and activity.
Today, things are considerably quieter.
The old mining sites are reminders of a remarkable chapter in Colorado history, and the surrounding landscape makes this an especially memorable place to explore.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
The Route of Silver Kings travels through high-altitude mining country, so come prepared for changing weather, uneven roads, and plenty of sunshine.
Bring water, wear layers, and stick to established public routes. Historic mine structures can be unstable, and abandoned mine openings are never places to explore.
And if you're visiting from a lower elevation, don't underestimate Leadville's thin air. Even the locals notice it sometimes.
